Summer Session
STRATEGIC PLAN
May 2006
Summer Session 2010 will be seamlessly integrated academically with FWS while maintaining the unique character necessary for an optional term that also serves students from the entire UC system as well as the general public. Special opportunities afforded through Summer Session, opportunities such as an Early Start Program for freshmen and study abroad programs, will both support and enhance the overall academic experience of students. Intensive residential programs and online courses designed to attract students from throughout the UC system will make it possible to serve students from other campuses. Summer Session, which will be both integrated and special, will play a significant role in accommodating the projected growth in enrollments at UCI and students will use the summer to make faster progress toward the degree making room for new students. It will also be characterized by high quality logistical support, convenience for students, and sensitivity to the financial demands on students.
Following are ten specific goals that support the general goal of Summer Session:
- Summer Session enrollment will grow to 40% of the SCH in an average FWS quarter by 2010.
- The distribution of faculty and instructors for Summer Session will be approximately the same as FWS by 2010
- The Summer Session program will be planned and scheduled at the same time as FWS are planned and scheduled
- Summer Session at UCI will be seen both internally and externally as the most innovative, creative, and fun summer offering in the UC system
- All resources necessary to support the preceding goals will be provided: resource allocation processes will be predictable and stable by 2008
- By 2010, UCI Summer Session Travel-Study programs will serve more than 1000 UC students per summer and will be considered the most exciting and innovative travel programs in the system.
- By 2010 twenty-five percent of the SCH will be generated from online courses
- By 2010 25% of entering freshmen and transfer students will be enrolling in the Summer Session Early Start Program.
- By 2010, UCI Summer Session will offer a “package” of courses and curriculum, housing, financial aid, work, and student activities designed to make UCI Summer Session the option of choice for UCI matriculated students.
- By 2010, UCI will double the number of non-UCI UC matriculated students over the Summer 2005 year.
Institutional Structure
Summer Session provides high quality and innovative programs for matriculated UCI students and for a diverse range of visiting students including students from other UC campuses and international students. Summer Session is distinguished from Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters by open enrollment, flexible course formats, and special opportunities for international study and other kinds of coursework not easily accommodated in the regular academic year. Summer Session activities and policies will be overseen by a committee appointed by the EVC/Provost. The day-to-day administration of Summer Session will be the responsibility of a university officer (currently the Dean of Continuing Education) who will command the necessary resources and institutional capacity to carry out those responsibilities (currently arranged through University Extension). Curriculum planning and instructor selection and approval will continue to be the responsibility of the Schools and Departments supported by Summer Session personnel.
In 2005, Summer Session enrollments equaled approximately 21% of the UC student credit hours taught in a regular quarter. By 2010 this will grow to 40% through a combination of financial incentives, changing student behavior, and increasing programmatic opportunities. Collaboration with the Division of Undergraduate Education will increase as we develop programs that extend beyond disciplinary boundaries such as programs for freshmen and transfer students.

Staff
To support the proposed programmatic expansion we will need proportionate growth in support staff in Summer Session in addition to new staff skilled in program planning and management.
Support Services and Facilities
Staffing needs will also be increased for Health Services, Technology and Instructional Support Services, Classroom Support Services, Academic Counseling, Library, IRC Testing, Tutoring, and Student Housing. Support for Summer Orientation, Testing and other pre-matriculation services is currently provided by staff members who shift their focus to these activities during the Summer.
Expansion in classroom space, offices, and housing will be required. Large classrooms and lecture halls are in particularly high demand during the summer for Summer courses, Orientation, Testing, and Conference Services. In addition, renovations are traditionally scheduled during summer.
Campus Life
Expanding Summer Session will produce an overall increase in student demand for year-round housing contracts. In addition, planned special intensive programs, such as language immersion programs, will require a particular kind of group housing experience.
ASUCI fees are currently not collected for Summer and therefore the activities do not extend over the summer. We need to develop an alternate plan for creating activity on the campus during the summer months.
Public Role
The Special Programs offered through Summer Session (i.e. On-Line courses, Travel-Study Programs, and intensive residential programs) will attract a large number of UC matriculates from other campuses furthering our reputation and influence in the state and beyond.
